11 Meetings to discover 3D Reality capture with Romain Sommero from Leica Geosystems

The needs for 3D Reality capture are growing in construction, industry and civil engineering works. The use is divided between surveys of the existing, control of the progress of a project or dimensional measurement in the industrial environment. Whatever the medium, the expectations are similar, speed and simplicity without compromising on quality.

A use case?

Today, it is possible to deploy 3D survey equipment on site in record time. You can scan your site under construction and monitor the progress of the work in real time. The provision of these visualizations is simplified and facilitated by software tools adapted for decision-making and collaboration. This data is accessible anywhere with your phone, tablet or in the office on your computer. You save precious time for your teams and customers and speed up decision-making.

How to succeed in a 3D capture operation through its three main stages: acquisition, processing and deliverables?

You have to choose the right equipment for your project, define the specifications precise and expectations of your customer. The acquisition and use of static or dynamic sensors has been simplified. The stages of data assembly and preparation require very specific control before distribution of the point cloud to future users. This is a key step today in the processing chain. The point cloud will then be made available to the various trades and used for the creation of 2D plan, 3D modeling, visualization, measurement.

Leica Geosystems recently released the new RTC 360 station, could you tell us a little more about this solution and its main advantages?

It is a real technological gap which is crossed with this solution. We are pushing back all the previously established standards. Speed, simplicity, quality, the RTC360 adapts in all types of environments and for all users. The 3 main advantages are its new laser system 2 000 000 points per second, its imagery HDR high definition captured in 1 min and its automated field assembly system using an innovative process coupling the inertial unit and 5 cameras

What do you think would be the future uses and trends around 3D scanning?

If we go back 20 years, at the beginning of 3D scanning, we can better appreciate the progress made in terms of portability, autonomy, speed, quality ...

At the time, this technology was reserved for scholars, today it is used in ever more varied fields. The laser is one of the essential tools today, as could photography for the documentation of a construction site.

Photogrammetry and lasergrammetry have coexisted for years to meet the different needs of projects. Why not link the benefits of both in the future ?

A word about your Roadshow 2018 France event?

The RTC has been talked about a lot on social media; a tweet caught my attention: " There are 2 kinds of people in the world, those who have not seen the # RTC360 solution at work and those who wish to buy it »Come meet our teams and discover the RTC360 and all of our reality capture solutions during the 12 dates planned throughout the territory.
